SHAKASAMBA was born at the newly opened SHAKA brewing company in Sunnyvale, California - we named our group after it.

For SHAKA Brewing, Kiyoe formed a small samba group called "Trio Brasileiro."  Before starting this group, she has been singing Bossa Nova and MPB with pianist Jarrell Irvin, who has been playing and studying Brazilian music for a long time.  For SHAKA, percussionist Brad Hamilton joined us, adding some cool samba grooves; we then became "Trio Brasileiro”. At our first SHAKA gig, wonderful Sambista and long-time friend Aki Ueno stopped by -  we connected instantly, so she joined the group. Most recently drummer and percussionist Jeff Hanson joined our group to play various styles of Brazilian music, and expand our musical journey!
